A man who dumped a severely wounded dog in a bin then left it to bleed to death over 15 hours after it was stabbed 11 times has been jailed.

Victor Hammond, 67, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the bull terrier which died a ‘long and painful death’.

The female pet was knifed by an unknown attacker between 4.45pm and 6.45pm, before Hammond placed her in a communal waste bin.

A passer-by called the RSPCA at 10am the next morning after discovering the whimpering pooch, she was still alive but had lost ‘huge amounts’ of blood.

The owner of the dog and the attacker were never traced.

RSPCA inspector Imara O’Niocail said: “This poor dog basically bled to death in a bin for around 15 hours. I can only imagine the pain and suffering she must have gone through.

“It was horrendous enough that she was stabbed 11 times – a horrific attack. But what made this case even worse is the fact she would likely have survived the attack had she not been put in the bin so carelessly.”

Hammond admitted failing to provide the necessary veterinary care and attention she needed

Imara added: “Despite the number of times she was stabbed, the wounds somehow missed all her vital organs, so had she gone straight to a vet they would probably have been able to save her.

“Instead she was dumped like rubbish, wounded but alive, and was just left to bleed to death for at least 15 hours. I do wonder that if she had been left on the street, someone may have spotted her sooner and given her the help she needed.”

Hammond, from Hackney, pleaded guilty at Thames Magistrates’ Court’ yesterday to charges under the Animal Welfare Act.

He was sent to prison for 10 weeks and disqualified from keeping all animals for life before being made to pay £250 costs.
