Shocked volunteers from an animal welfare organization found a paralyzed dog abandoned on railroad tracks in Philadelphia.

It’s unclear at this time exactly how the dog ended up on the tracks, but Philly Rescue Angels, a nonprofit organization in Pennsylvania that cares for abandoned animals, said someone may have abandoned the animal nearby, as a collar and leash were found near it.

The organization decided to name the dog Lucky. Lucky was found on November 29th and taken to the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine where he was given the necessary treatments.

“Someone dumped this poor looking dog on the train tracks, he was laying here for TWO days, literally laying his body down and the train was running over him,” the organization said on Facebook. “We are devastated, this is pure malice.”

Vets found his spinal cord severed and believe the injury was caused by being hit by the train. Unfortunately, the dog will not be able to walk again.

Since then, Lucky has undergone several surgeries, receiving two plates along his spine to heal the injury.

After nearly $18,000 in veterinary care, Lucky is now on the road to recovery but may never walk again, so the organization is fundraising for his future medical care and treatment.

However, doctors say Lucky is “doing great”, especially for a dog who spent two whole days abandoned on the train tracks.

“He has a great appetite and may be able to go to a foster home very soon,” Philly Rescue Angels said.
