A brave dog that was savagely attacked by a pack of eight coyotes as he protected his owner’s sheep and goats managed to save the whole flock during a lengthy fight that saw him kill all the advancing predators.

Casper, a sheepdog from Georgia in the United States, left a trail of blood and parts of his tail behind him as he disappeared for two days after the battle erupted whilst he was on guard.

Grateful farmer John Wierwiller later found his heroic pet injured with gaping wounds to his neck and sides.

He raced Casper to the vets, with the pooch still receiving care more than a month after the horrid attack thanks to support from the LifeLine Animal Project charity.

John told news outlet WAGA: “We knew he was hurt because we found parts of his tail and blood and other things, so we were worried.

“He was kinda looking at me like, ‘Boss, stop looking at how bad I look, just take care of me,’ it looked like a coyote grabbed his skin and peeled it right off.”

He added in an interview with WBTV: “I can’t even explain how good it is to see him right now, because I felt like there was no way he was going to live when I saw him after the attack.”

John has praised The LifeLine Animal Project, that aims to ensure no animals that could be healthy are put to death, after they raised a whopping $15,000 (£12,000) to help pay for Casper’s treatment.

The warrior sheepdog is set to stay under their care for another few weeks as he slowly recovers from the horror injuries.

Experts said the gang-like behaviour from the coyotes was rare and it is uncommon for so many to team up in one pack.
