One of the eleven dogs saved by Martn Miranda and his family, who also saved a horse intended to be sent to a zoo as food for the lions, is known as Forastero. The horse they called Canaro was seriously ill, but the dog never left him alone until it was already too late.
Even though the Canary was extremely fragile and couldn’t support itself, the family decided to ask the owner if they could try to save it. They had previously saved chickens, rabbits, and dogs, so they were unable to accept the concept of giving this horse a rider.
Canaro stayed with Martn’s family for five months, but after that time, nothing improved. Canaro’s health deteriorated till he was unable to stand on his own.
Another non-profit organization, Volunteers for Our Horses (VPN), alerted the members of the Association of Maltreated Horses (ACMA) in Argentina regarding a horse that was lying on the ground and was unable to stand.
The horse had no teeth, was obviously very old and worn out, had eaten away at its bones, and displayed other signs of wear characteristic of an elderly horse.
The horse veterinarian realized at that point that he wasn’t dealing with another case of horse abstinence, which is typical in the region where horses are treated like racehorses until they recover from fatigability.
Canarry was dying and unable to move, so the doctor gave him a shot to put him to sleep and enable him to finally take a break from his agonizing exhaustion.
